Dumpster diving in and of itself is not illegal. It is a terrible thought that food waste costs $20 billion/year to the Australian economy. Monty introduced us to dumpster diving some years ago. Many dumpsters are locked, but last night's
was a bonanza, with more than $215 of prepacked food: cherry tomatoes (27 punnets), mushrooms, bananas, sweet corn, potatoes, snow peas, passion fruit, apples and more. We did not throw a single item out because of bad quality. So far I've made a pasta sauce and marinated the mushrooms.
Needless to say, it's best to avoid any mince meat or sea food you find in a dumpster.
